World Book Day - 7th March

There's only 10 days left until World Book Day 2019! But what exactly is it? I promise you Mums and Dads that it is more than an annoying day that forces you to scramble around at the last minute trying to concoct a suitable costume for your beloved bookworm after they helpfully left the letter about it in their bookbag for a month beneath the slowly rotting easy-peeler! We've all been there.

In reality though World Book Day is not actually about dressing up. It's about providing children with access to quality literature. According to their website: 'World Book Day is the world’s biggest campaign to provide every child and young person in the country with a book of their own.' This is achieved through their book token scheme - children are given a £1 book token through their education setting and can trade these at bookshops for a titles from a range of £1 books (therefore making them free books) or to deduct from higher cost books.

This year's books:

In the future I would love to be able to participate and accept these book tokens, but unfortunately I'm not yet able to do that. In the meantime, take them to some of the larger bookshops, booksellers and supermarkets.

So why all the fuss about dressing up - it's just about celebrating the joy of reading, creating a bit of childhood magic and encouraging children to talk to each other about books. Join in if you can.

If you are looking for more information, visit the World Book Day website, it has some wonderful resources and ideas perfect for parents, teachers and children to use.

Now to decide what I'm going to dress up as...
